Death of Ex-Owls midfielder O’Donnell, aged 72

Neil O’Donnell, former Wednesday midfielder of the seventies, has passed away at the age of 72.

He played 47 games for us between 1975 and 1977, scoring two goals, having joined Wednesday from Gillingham and so linking up again with former Gills boss Len Ashurst who was in charge at Hillsborough at the time.

O’Donnell, who had previously played for Norwich, was forced to retire from football through injury early in 1977 and was granted a testimonial match at Hillsborough against the Canaries.

The thoughts and sympathies of all London Owls are with Neil’s family at this extremely sad time.
