Carlos: How did we not win this match?

Carlos Carvalhal was left shaking his head – along with the travelling Wednesday fans – as we failed to turn chances into goals in the the first-half at Brentford.

We should have had the points wrapped up by half-time but, as it was, we ended up salvaging a point in a 1-1 draw through Sam Hutchinson’s powerful injury-time header, the Bees having taken a 54th minute lead when Lasse Vibe charged down Keiren Westwood’s attempted clearance and the ball rebounded into the net.

We totally dominated the first 45 minutes, with Lucas Joao missing a great double chance, while Daniel Pudil fired wide when well placed, Stephen Fletcher had an effort cleared off the line and Joao saw his header tipped away by keeper Daniel Bentley,

Carvalhal said: “I am not at all happy with a point. How can I be happy with a point when I counted at least seven clear chances in the first half?

“We have created enough chances in the last two games to win three or four but the way we created them with artistic play and good football was a positive thing for me.”

It was a different story in the second half, with Brentford showing more aggression and invention and taking the lead through Vibe.

Boosted by this, the Bees continued to dominate but Wednesday came back into contention in the last quarter with Bentley producing an excellent double save from Tom Lees before Hutchinson’s bullet header in added time.

Wednesday lost impressive new signing David Jones on 73 minutes when he was dismissed for two yellow cards and Bees goalscorer Vibe suffered the same fate 15 minutes later.

The draw leaves Wednesday in 19th place, with five points from five games.
