Bruce gives verdict on ‘debut day’ success

Steve Bruce admitted he thought it might not be Wednesday’s day … until Lucas Joao grabbed an 89th minute in the manager’s first game in charge at Ipswich on Saturday.

Having seen Wednesday fail to convert several good chances, Bruce said: “It was great to be back and I’m delighted with the win. It’s a good job we got the winner, because a draw may have felt like a defeat.

“We had plenty of chances and I thought it was going to be one of those days. But we kept at it and Adam Reach has shown that little bit of quality right at the end and Lucas finished really well.”

He added: “It should’ve been a lot more comfortable than 1-0 to be brutally honest. We missed some really good chances which on another day could’ve gone against us.

“But overall I’m pleased. We were comfortable apart from our finishing.

“There’s still a lot to do, let’s not get carried away. But, defensively it was good to see and I have to thank the lads who’ve put in a lot of work on the training pitch to make that happen.

“You’ve got to make sure you give yourselves a platform and today there were glimpses that that can be more than just in defence.”
