Barkley banks double as Owls return to winning ways

Dave Jones said Saturday’s 3-0 victory over bottom club Ipswich was the one he could sense was going to come sooner rather than later.

Ross Barkley fired us in front in the first minute and we could have been three-up inside the first four minutes against a woeful home side. The Owls then sat back after the first 15 minutes and might have been punished by a better team before the break.

However, Barkley struck again on 58 minutes with a cracking drive from the edge of the box and then Crhis O’Grady sent Michail Antonio through with 10 minutes remaining, the winger rounding the Ipswich keeper before slotting home from a tight angle.

It was Wednesday’s first away league win of the campaign, the first time we have not conceded in the league this season and our first victory in 10 games.

Jones said afterwardds: “I’ve been saying a result like that was coming and it arrived today.

“The results have not been matching the performances but today it did and all credit to them. Ipswich have come up against us when we were at full force.

“We didn’t deserve to lose at Blackburn in midweek but we could sense it was beginning to turn for us. I’m pleased that I am discussing what went right for us rather than what didn’t.”

Victory leaves us third from bottom, Bristol City slipped below us after losing at home to Hull while Peterborough moved out of the bottom three with a 3-0 win over Derby. Posh are ahead on goal difference, with a showdown with them at Hillsborough coming up next Saturday
