Bannan cracker sets Wednesday on way to victory

Two quick goals deep into the second half saw Wednesday collect their first division one win of the season against Doncaster at Hillsborough today.

Barry Bannan broke the deadlock on 72 minutes in stunning style, curling a tremendous 25-yarder high into the net in front of the Kop.

Three minutes later we doubled the lead when Jaden Brown’s low cross was pushed away by keeper Pontus Dahlberg and Dennis Adeniran was on hand to turn the ball home via the post from eight yards out.

The victory takes us into sixth place with four points from the first two games and with another home match, against Fleetwood, on Tuesday evening.

It was Wednesday’s first league game in front of the Hillsborough fans since February 2020 and the 24,000-plus crowd saw the Owls start brightly, without testing Dahlberg.

The visitors looked more likely to score as the half wore on, Dan Gardner cutting in from the left and firing just wide from the edge of the box and then Tiago Cukur shooting over from close range.

Bannan will have felt he should have done better with two free kicks fired over the bar and then Bailey Peacock-Farrell had to push Kyle Knoyle’s low effort away for a corner.

Wednesday began the second half in more aggressive manner with Lewis Wing’s 25-yarder pushed over the bar by Dahlberg and then a quick Wing free kick found Andre Green, he cut into the box but the finish lacked conviction and the keeper was able to block the effort.

With Wednesday continuing to pose most of the threats, Florian Kamberi headed over the bar on the hour mark when he should have tested Dahlberg.

However, our pressure was finally rewarded with Bannan’s cracker on 72 minutes, followed by Adeniran’s effort soon afterwards, to seal the points.

There was still time for Doncaster to be awarded a harsh penalty for handball four minutes from the end but Omar Bogle’s spot kick came back off the post and the rebound was fired wide.
