Atdhe ‘could be offered new Owls contract’

Atdhe Nuhiu looks likely to be offered a new contract with Wednesday … if Jos Luhukay stays at the club after this season.

Nuhiu has played the best football of his Hillsborough career in recent weeks, injuries giving him the opportunity for a decent run in the side after he had dropped down the pecking order under Carlos Carvalhal.

His improved form has been one of the few bright spots in some difficult times for Wednesday and, after scoring twice against Preston on Saturday, Luhukay hinted that he would offer Nuhiu the chance to remain at S6 when the striker’s contract runs out at the end of the campaign.

The Owls boss said: “Atdhe knows I have much respect for him and that he is an important player for us. I speak many times with him and he knows that we like him.

“We know that he is an important player for us and let’s not forget that, before my time, he was not a first eleven player and not playing many games. Now, in the last three months he has exploded and that is very umportant for our position in the league.

“We have not talked about his personal situation but we speak about the trust we have in him and that we believe in him.”

Reflecting on the 4-1 win over Preston, a delighted Luhukay said: “Fantastic, I’m very happy for the team, players and fans. What a game for everybody.

“We made two goals early in the half, it was a happy situation, it was fantastic to win like that today.”

He added: “I am happy when I see the fans celebrating and the support they give and I am very happy for my players – they worked so hard in the last days this week for this game.”
